Volunteer: Join a Committee

Heart-Links is managed by a Board of Directors consisting of up to 15 elected volunteers and an Executive Committee elected by the Board.  The day-to-day work is done through six standing committees, made up of a mixture of Board and non-Board members.  We are always looking for volunteers to contribute their time and energy to these committees.
The Standing Committees are:

• The Work/Awareness Trip Committee
This committee prepares, organizes, coordinates and evaluates all aspects of our annual trip to Peru. This committee is a pivotal one, since the Work/Awareness Trip embodies the mission of Heart-Links. The trip initiates linking between Peruvians and Canadians, raises awareness, helps recruit committed volunteers, and generates on-going support. Careful attention is given to the selection and briefing of the participants, and debriefing upon their return. Members from our Peruvian sister organizations assist in the planning and coordination of the trips.

For more information, please read this position description for the Work/ Awareness Trip Committee.

• The Peru Projects Committee
This committee makes recommendations to the board for funding programs and projects that promote development in Peru through community initiatives in the fields of education, nutrition, health, and income generation. Its main responsibilities include: preparation of the annual agent agreements with our Peruvian sister organizations; actively seeking and reviewing work plans and/or project proposals and budgets developed by these organizations; and monitoring and evaluating economic and narrative quarterly and final reports. The committee promotes a strong participatory development approach and encourages training opportunities for all. It keeps in close contact with our partners through e-mails, conference calls, and annual monitoring visits.  Knowledge of northern Peru is a requirement for membership in this committee.  The ability to speak Spanish is an asset.

For more information, please read this Peru Projects Committee position description.

• The Public Engagement Committee
This committee raises awareness in Canada about poverty in regions of the developing world with emphasis on Northern Peru, especially the coastal valley of Zaña.  The hope is that this awareness will lead Canadians to an understanding of the issues at stake, and encourage their personal involvement and action. The committee’s mandate is realized through presentations to local schools and groups, our newsletter, web site, brochures, and networking with other organizations and individuals.

For more information on positions within this committee please read this position description.

• The Fund Development Committee
This committee oversees the generation of revenues to support Peruvian projects and raise awareness of Canadians about poverty in Peru. It manages the donor database and pursues research and fund development appeals to encourage new and existing individual and organizational donors to become sustaining supporters of Heart-Links’ work.

• The Special Events Committee

• The Finance Committee
