Through the efforts of the women in the three comedores that Heart-Links supports a program was developed that addresses many of the issues faced by the adolescents in their families. Working in cooperation with student volunteers from the university in the neighbouring city of Chiclayo a Saturday program is carried out at the three comedores.

Each week a wide variety of workshops, social and sports activities are held that contributes to the development of social and leadership skills in the 40 participants that regularly attend. Every sixth week the three groups meet collectively to share and celebrate in their achievements.

One of the program's many objectives is to develop adolescent leaders within each comedor community so that ultimately  the weekly programs will be self-sustaining.

In Their Own Words...

“At first I was a shy boy with few ideas on how to overcome the problems of Aviacion, where I live, but now I realize that my small actions with the children make a big difference, help children to develop skills and my community to progress.”
~Edgar, 13 yrs. Youth Links member

“I volunteer with the children because my training as a leader made me realize it is us, every child and every youth, who will build the present for our people and country.”
~ Mariela, 17 yrs. Youth Links member
