Peru Projects: Reque Metalworkers' Micro-Enterprise

In Reque, a region of high unemployment where social conditions prevent most young people from entering higher education, a workshop that can provide training in a marketable trade is vitally important.

For two years, Heart-Links worked in partnership with the San Martin de Thours Parish to develop such a facility. A 200-hour Metalwork Technical Specialization course offered in the community by the prestigious Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruis Gallo and funded by Heart-Links marked the culmination of this undertaking. Six workers completed the course and now hold specialized trade certificates. They went on to establish an independent and competitive micro-enterprise.

In Their Own Words...

“[The program] has helped to guide me to be perfect as an apprentice, student, and most important as a person.  It has given me the opportunity to unite with my colleagues in the group, friends and family."
Stalin, aged 25

“My dreams and plan for the future is to be a professional.  That way I can serve and/or help people in need like the way they are helping me at this time, giving me the opportunity to learn and go forward in this program."
Juan, aged 21
