| Peru Projects: Women Leaders of Lambayeque Region Training Project |
||||
| In their family life and outside it, women from all backgrounds in Peru frequently face machismo, discrimination and other kinds of social, political and economic oppression. This project enabled 25 women to learn the skills to be leaders in their communities as agents of change and liberation. This was accomplished through a 2-year Leadership Training program for urban and rural women drawn from nine Women’s Circles in the northern city of Chiclayo and the surrounding Lambayeque region. | ![]() |

| Chosen by her circle, each participant was committed to demonstrating and sharing her learning with the other circle members, so that all together the project affected some 150 families. In year one the women concentrated on Personal Development through workshops on Self-esteem, Conflict Management, Spirituality, and Communication Techniques. At the end of the year, they had grown in self-confidence and were united by strong ties of friendship and solidarity. They felt secure in their new ideas through presenting them to the other women in their circles. |

The training in year two ranged across many aspects of Women’s Leadership, such as Leadership Techniques, Participatory Management, Gender Equality, Women’s Rights, Citizen’s Rights, and Sexual and Reproductive Rights. As a result of the experiential and participatory training methods used, it was a smooth transition for the participants from the “classroom” to the community. Following a jubilant closing ceremony, and working with the other members of their circles, they are now utilizing their leadership skills to tackle local issues and make changes in their neighbourhoods. |
